So, I know that we discussed in class just strange it is moving from literature/prose/essays to Shakespeare. His words are almost like a completely different language. I thought that maybe some people would find this site helpful. I know that in high school we read Shakespeare and then we always went online and had to find modern English translation for his text.
So here it is:http://www.shakespeare-online.com/
On that same note, the way that Shakespeare shows us the divide between faiths, colors and traditions is interesting. How different and yet similar those times were from ours! Othello experiences acceptance in the Duke's army, but... undoubtedly went through instances where he was put down or mocked for his position in life. Comparing that to the Inquisition, to Civil Rights, to the Holocaust, to the Genocide in Darfur or even to the Genocide in Rwanda .. the same problems in society that have gone on for centuries definitely permeate our society today. Ironic when you think about it. Society today seems to view themselves/we view ourselves as developing so much past the grievances and narrow-minded mistakes of the past. But just look at Africa! Even look at the Middle East! At 9/11. How much farther have we really come?
If we look at ourselves objectively.. are we really that different from the characters in Shakespeare's plays?? Aren't we just as judgmental? Just as quick to cubby-hole people based on the way the look? The color of their skin? Or the shape of their nose? How much father have we really come??
