Optional blog topics on Jamaica Kincaid's _Lucy_

1. Throughout the novel, Lucy’s relationships with others reveal a great deal about the development of her sense of self and identity. For example, we’ve begun to explore how Lucy’s interactions with Mariah lead her to reflect on her relationship with her own mother in Antigua as well as how out of place she feels in Mariah’s world. With this in mind, explore the significance of Lucy's friendship with Peggy. Why is this relationship so important to Lucy? What does it reveal about the title character?

2. Although we are often told to "not judge a book by its cover," cover art has a significant impact on our initial impressions of a novel. It has the power to shape the way we imagine a character's appearance, the setting, or even the mood of the story--not to mention that editors and authors design their covers intentionally. How does the cover image on your copy of Lucy influence your reading of the novel so far? I've posted the two paintings that appear on the most recent editions of the novel here. Feel free to select from either in your exploration.
