Throughout the first two acts of Translations I have been very curious about the relationships of the characters. Other than familiar ties, relationships seem to be overlooked. Initially it seems as though there is something more than a teacher-student relationship between Manus and Sarah. But is Manus experiencing a fatherly or brotherly love, or is something more than that? And what is there between Manus and Sarah? There are instances in which I wonder if there are feelings between these characters, but the play is rather vague on that aspect.
That is, the play is vague until the very end of the second act. Here Yolland expresses his love for Maire. I can't help but find this relationship strange and have feelings against it. It doesn't seem possible. Yolland has only been there a few days and hardly spoken with Maire. He is there strictly on business and will be leaving soon. Maire says she wants to live with him anywhere, but I feel like these are such rash feelings. Nothing to come of this will last. As much as I want to know about the relationships between the characters, this isn't really what I was hoping for.

Interesting questions. Go check out Katie's post--she's asking similar sorts of things about the Yolland/Maire relationship.
